[NEWS] Artful set to release new EP tomorrow

0

The name Artful Dodger will always bring smiles aplenty to those who were garage-heads back in the day.

Well, as you may or may not know, Pete and Mark split from being the production powerhouses that they were – Pete went under the guise of ‘DEVolution’, whilst Mark branched out by himself under the name Artful. [Oh, and the Artful Dodger name is still owned by the labels hence neither party can use them].

Anyhows, after a great release around 18 months ago of Could Just Be The Bassline (featuring the fabulous vocals of Kal Lavelle though originally recorded with Ed Sheeran), Mark is set to release his new EP tomorrow. From the teaser that Artful released last month, ‘Unfinished Business’ is shaping up to be a great start to your 2013 soundtrack.

Check out the Soundcloud teaser below, as well as a live vid of one of my favourite Artful Dodger tracks ‘Think About Me’, recorded in London just under a year back.

[NEWS] HMV finds a buyer in Hilco

0

Breaking news within the HMV saga continues, with Hilco (the restructuring specialist who also owns HMV Canada) announced as taking immediate control of HMV and their £200m debt (acquired from HMV’s lenders RBS & Lloyds).

Although Hilco don’t actually OWN HMV just yet, the deal gives them effective control ofthe retailer’s DVD and music catalogue.

Both Hilco and Deloitte have yet to make a public announcement on this, but we’ll be there to update once we hear anything more newsworthy!

[NEW MUSIC] Prince returns with new track ‘Screwdriver’

0

This is amazing, so so amazing. Hearing that a new Prince release was on the horizon certainly made us squeal like a 10 year old at a One Direction concert.

It’s fairly un-Princey – very rocky and far far removed from the New Power Generation goodness of many-moons ago, but still, it’s Prince. Like Justin Timberlake’s latest cut, the new song by both of these artists isn’t [unfortunately] phenomenal; however the fact that they’re back in the music game is.

Unfortunately, due to restrictions, we couldn’t post the new track on the blog, however head over here to check out the lyric video. We’ll of course do our utmost to share once we find a legal way around it.

Oh, and also, the associated post picture is of the latest Billboard issue. Prince will be performing at the annual Billboard Awards on 19th May as well as collect the [much-deserved] Icon award.

A good year in music so far 🙂

Live Nation move their London concerts to Olympic Park

0

Born In Sound has learnt this morning that concert promoter Live Nation has secured the Olympic Park to host their next wave of summer festivals.

AEG recently secured the contract to stage summer events in Hyde Park for the 5 years so this seems like a natural progression for the Live Nation brand.

Last summer’s Hyde Park concerts were showered in controversy, when Paul McCartney’s duet with Bruce Springsteen was cut short and microphones turned off due to the concert overrunning. Likewise, complaints soared during Blur’s Olympic Closing gig where sound levels were hardly concert-worthy.

The first concerts at the Olympic Park have been confirmed as Wireless Festival and Hard Rock Callling.

London Mayor, Boris Johnson, said “The confidence now shown by one of the world’s leading live entertainment promoters to relocate two of its biggest music festivals from the centre of the capital is a ringing endorsement of our legacy plans. Along with the other major international sports events we have already secured this latest news proves that the park has a very bright future indeed.”

Beyonce performs at Obama’s Inauguration

0
Today Barack Obama was sworn in for his second term in the White House, and naturally HOVA and Beyonce were the celeb guests of choice. Beyonce sung an unsurprisingly stunning version of the National Anthem at the inauguration, watched by her mogul husband close-by.

I personally find it amazing and satisfying how the self-proclaimed Bonnie and Clyde rogues of the music-world have gone on to become such an inspiration around the globe. Forget Justin & Selena, R-Patz & Kirsten or Chris Brown & Rihanna. Beyonce & Jay Z are not just world-class performers, celebrity parents, style icons, a marketer’s wet dream, entrepreneurs or Obama’s mates – they are role models. Long may they continue to be in the public eye doing themselves and music proud.

[NEW MUSIC] Disclosure ft AlunaGeorge – White Noise

0

I’m not gonna lie; I’m besotted with AlunaGeorge. Since I first heard about them almost 18 months ago (and yes it is a ‘them’, not a ‘her’), every single cut I’ve heard from them has been nothing short of remarkable.

Once I heard that they were featuring on the next Disclosure track (also a blog favourite, whose track ‘Latch’ is a firm favourite), my excitement levels reached atmospherical heights. So, after being premiered on Annie Mac’s show neigh-on 10 minutes ago, here it is in its full glory.

It takes some listening to, but after a couple of plays this is definitely going to be part of your soundtrack for Spring 2013. It’s infectious… very, very, very infectious. The single’s out March 24 on PMR Records.

[NEWS] HMV to accept gift cards again

0

HMV may have gone into administration, but it seems that they’re still listening to what their customers are saying.

After the beleaguered chain fell foul of the interwebs and collapsed last week, administrators Deloitte announced today that as of Tuesday (22nd January), gift cards and vouchers will once again be redeemable instore.

This is great news for fans and customers alike; many of whom were given vouchers for Christmas. As announced in our last post regarding HMV’s demise (here), this bold move by Deloitte could potentially be the start of great things for the brand; specifically with the big labels willing to get behind the troubled retailer.

After last week’s collapse, consumer watchdogs called for laws to be changed for the redemption of gift vouchers when a firm going into liquidation… this could be another step in that direction.

I hope HMV survives this….

[REVIEW] Jessie Ware in the USA

0

We’re all no strangers to the magnificence of Jessie Ware. She’s been simmering in the UK for the past year or so, and it seems that now she’s shooting herself all the way to the stars and stripes of the USA too. Described by the American press as a “British chanteuse” (Idolator.com), she made her American TV debut on Late Night With Jimmy Falllon last week and didn’t disappoint. She performed a stunning version of ‘Wildest Moments’ (backed by The Roots) , and proved why she’s one of the best female UK live acts out there right now. Nailing a performance on a US Chat Show is a great way to become a household name in the States, and I predict an Adele-style rise to stardom for her in 2013.

I was lucky enough to see her perform last year at an intimate in-store gig on New Bond Street, and was pleasantly struck by how humbled and modest she was. She seems like a genuinely nice girl, and I sincerely hope she takes the world by storm. It’s always a pleasure to see UK talent making it in the USA.

[NEWS] HMV rescue possible thanks to labels

0

Many people are still feeling the pain of HMV’s bankruptcy; for those who remember life pre-downloads, walking in to a record store was always a highlight for music and non-music fans alike.

Well, after last week’s demise, there could be some good news on the horizon. BiS have heard that both labels and film studios alike are eyeing up on ways in which they could help the retailer still exist in today’s download-centric world.

The behemoths within the entertainment industry (Warner, Sony & Universal) are potentially looking to consider incredibly generous credit terms to the struggling retailer, as well as slashing the price of DVDs & CDs at wholesale. Combined this should help HMV co-exist at the same RRPs (if not less) than the likes of Amazon and the big supermarkets out there.

We hope there could be some light on the end of the tunnel. Not only will the closing of HMV’s 223 stores help erase memories of in-store buying, but also the thought of over 4,000 jobs being lost will have a further devastating impact on the already-fragile UK economy.

Fingers crossed the top dog will return!
