Daft Punk change labels in preparation for new spring LP

0

Electronic supremos Daft Punk are rumoured to have ended their long-running terms with EMI and shifted to Sony’s Columbia label to release their long-awaited (untitled) 4th album.

Although not strictly have gone away, this is another big thumbs up for the #yearofthecomeback. Bar working on the Tron: Legacy soundtrack, the French duo’s last major release was 2007’s ‘Human After All’. A long list of artists have confirmed they are working on the new album, set to have been in production since 2010, including Panda Bear, Paul Williams, Chilly Gonzales, and most recently Nile Rodgers.

Looking forward to a Spring 2013 release on this one. Check out blog-favourite Aerodynamic below:

Why the #YearOfTheComeback is important for UK music. PT1 – MutyaKeishaSiobhan

The Sugababes. Back in their heyday, they were probably the only ‘girl-band’ out there that it was deemed cool to like. Launching on the scene with debut LP ‘One Touch’ in 2000, preceded by Top 10 smash ‘Overload’, critics applauded the girls for being so young yet singing and writing tracks that showed a far more mature side.

Unless you’d been living under the rock for the past few years though, you will obviously have been aware of the massive lineup changes that had made this cool girlband morph into something more of a laughing stock.

Though it was Sugababes 2.0 that had the most commercial success, it was the original lineup of Mutya Buena, Siobhan Donaghy and Keisha Buchanan that drove credibility. You all know the story – Siobhan left and was replaced by Heidi Range (whose debut with the band on Angels With Dirty Faces was also a highly commendable long-play). Then Mutya left several years later. After that, success continued with her replacement Amelle Berrabah, however the final nail in the coffin was when Keisha was ousted in 2009. There were no original Sugababes in the group, yet they continued.

On the other side, Donaghy released two absolutely outstanding albums – 2003’s ‘Revolution In Me’ was followed some years later by 2007’s ‘Ghosts’. Neither were commercially successful, however they were, quite rightly, critically acclaimed. They hit the nail on the head and cemented Donaghy as not just a talented singer, but a creative and powerful artiste too.

Back to Sugababes 1.0 though. Even though ‘Angels’ was a great album, it was One Touch that brought the band their credibility. The album is still incredibly pleasing on the ear (Run For Cover and Lush Life being just two standout masterpieces), and fans for years have been calling out for a follow-up. Even if it was just one follow-up, it was being pleaded for.

Enter 2011 when the girls kissed and made up. The Sugababes name still exists but quite rightly, the girls didn’t fight to use it (in fairness, the name is a laughing-stock now anyhow). They are now going under the guise Mutya Keisha Siobhan. I don’t need to explain that, do I?

After teasing us with interviews and the odd photoshoot in 2012, it’s 2013 that’ll be the year when we’ll finally hear new music and insiders say the music sounds great. With tracks written by pop supremos including Emeli Sande and Shaznay Lewis, there’s a lot to get excited for. What’s better, is that there’s no Guetta in sight!!

Check the playlist below to relisten their debut ‘One Touch’ and get to realise why we’re so excited to have these girls back on the scene.

[TV] Beyonce reveals all in intimate documentary

0

Feb 16, HBO. That’s the date and channel that Beyonce will bare all in a revealing and intimate documentary for her fans.

Known for her privacy, particularly around Blue’s birth, ‘Life Is But A Dream’ [according to insiders] will cover all angles of recent-B, from the controversial ‘sacking’ of her manager father Matthew Knowles, to her wildly-unpublicised devastating miscarage before Blue Ivy was conceived. Whilst the apparent (and controversial) lip-syncing at Obama’s recent inauguration has made recent headlines, this program is set to make you fall back in love with the talent that is Beyonce Carter (nee Knowles).

…. as if you ever fell out of love with her anyway….

[NEWS] Full Coachella line-up revealed

0

After last year’s fairly electro-filled lineup (Tiesto, SHM, Afrojack etc), and bar the ‘resurrection’ of Tupac, this year’s lineup of Coachella seems to have returned to its more ‘rockier’ roots! Organisers of the world-famous festival announced the initial lineup earlier today, with Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Blur and The Stone Roses leading the headliners.

This year’s lineup is set to be fairly interesting it seems; along with the aforementioned, we’ll also be seeing performances from the likes of Lou Reed, Infected Mushroom, Jurassic 5, Hot Chip, Alex Clare and Paul Oakenfold.

The full line-up can be seen in the blog lead image; tickets go on sale on Tuesday (29th January) at 6pm GMT, starting from $349 (about £220).

[NEW MUSIC] Jakwob (ft Maiday) – Fade

0

I first laid ears on Jakwob probably around the same time as many others – his remix of Ellie Goulding’s  ‘Starry Eyed’ is still, to this day, a firm favourite. A sheer of work art; fusing deep dubstep with a soulful tone – simply wonderful. He then followed this theme, albeit mellowing down the dubstep tones, with ‘Right Beside You’ (ft Smiler); another track that gets many a play on my various Spotify playlists.

This morning, Mr James Jacob graced t’internets with his next self-penned track (and hopefully one for the debut album), collaborating with Maiday on ‘Fade’. This is beautiful. Like ‘Right Beside You’, he’s really mellowed the dubstep and has released (or actually, set to release in March) a sound which harks back to the mid-90s. Taking more of a leaf out of Massive Attack (think ‘Unfinished Sympathy’), as well as The Source ft Candi Statton’s classic ‘You’ve Got The Love’, this follow-up to 2012’s ‘Blinding’ fuses cinematic percussion and piano with some chilled D&B. You’ll get what I mean when you listen to it [below].

The track’s set to be released on 18th March (preorder here).

Enjoy

[RUMOUR] Justin Timberlake’s ’20/20 Experience’ Release Date leaked?

0

March 19th…. that’s all we can really say so far (because, well, that’s all we really know!).

Eagle-eyed viewers amongst us will have seen in JT’s latest lyric video (here) the date crop up quickly… could this be the album release date? We think so.

As always, stay tuned for more info as and when we get it!

[VIDEO] Justin Timberlake – Suit & Tie (Lyric Video)

0

Here we go folks; the lyric video of JT’s welcome-back-to-the-pop-world, ‘Suit & Tie’. Though it’s the closest we’re getting to the final video for a while, this is probably one of the best lyric videos I’ve seen to date (obviously bar Dylan’s ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’)!

The class of the video matches the suave style of the track, particularly building on the ‘style-icon’ imagery that Timberlake has moulded himself towards over the past few years.

In truth, this video is very very good. My main questionable response to this is, do we need to actually have a true video?

Here it is for your viewing pleasure nonetheless:

[NEWS] Rapper Eve announces she’s ready to unleash her new album

0

Those who have been fans of Eve since her Scorpion days will rejoice at today’s announcement that she’s finally set to release her 4th studio LP, ‘Lip Lock’.

The new album, her first since 2002’s Eve-olution, has been in the making for almost as long as Dr Dre’s heavily-rumoured Detox. Originally titled ‘Here I Am’ and muted for a release in 2007, the album was initially preceded by the Swiss Beatz-produced ‘Tamborine’, however after many delays (apparently down to ‘issues’ with Interscope), Eve decided that 2013 was going to be her year.

With rumoured collaborations to include Chrisette Michele, Pusha T and Snoop Dogg [Lion],  Lip Lock is set for release on May 14.

Check out the official remix of lead single ‘She Bad Bad’ featuring Pusha T & Juicy J below:

[NEW MUSIC] Artful – Unfinished Business EP

0

It’s here! As per our blog post yesterday, Artful has unleashed his Unfinished Business EP onto t’internets. The link’s below as per, however it’s followed by our very very VERY quick snapshot ‘review’ about each track.

If you can’t be bothered reading it and just want to listen, then for all intense purposes, the EP is sublime.

Enjoy, here it is!

‘Architect’ featuring Cairo
– This opening track sounds very much like an excerpt from MJ Cole’s – Crazy Love. This is no bad thing; a fantastic way to open up the EP with a sorta ‘signature sound’ of the early 2000’s.

Wasteman
– soulful DnB but then throws in some wonderful synths
– it’s the brilliant UKG mix (track 4) that really does this track justice. A combination of 2-step and 4/4; again fantastically executed.

He Loves Me (ft Terri Walker)
– I love Terri Walker’s vocals, so hearing these two working together is always going to make me smile.
– My favourite track on the EP. Love it.
– The first 0:01 sounds like it could be the intro to Moving too Fast (just a wee observation there!)

Quick
– Started running out of superlatives here. Again, very nice – slightly less soulful, but think along the lines of Todd Edwards’ ‘Shut The Door’-vibe – the sweet vocals mixed with a 4/4 beat.

Planes, Trains & Migraines
– feel like I should be hearing this in Napa 2000, or at a come-down party in Ibiza.
– Instrumental-only; hopefully Artful will seed this out as a competition to find some vocal talents.

All in, really liking this, and fantastic to be hearing some new Artful (Dodger) again!

[NEW MUSIC] Dag Savage – When it Rains f/ Aloe Blacc

0

This. Is. Beautiful.

This is the kind of hip hop that seems to have been omnipresent from the airwaves for far too long now! I’m obsessed. Dag Savage, a collaboration between Exile (so underrated as a hip-hop producer, it’s not fair), and Johanz, have linked up with Aloe Blacc’s sublime vocals, for this astonishingly brilliant, and smooth, hiphop track.

Video after the jump – would be keen to know all your thoughts
