First experiencing South Africa on set for the music video of her breakthrough hit ‘Gratitude’, Little Simz returned this summer to explore the Johannesburg music scene, hooking up with Noisey for the second instalment of their Nando’s Music Exchange partnership.
The ten-minute documentary, which you can watch in full below, sees Simz return to South Africa to meet Gigi Lamayne, exploring how musical culture differs, yet shows multiple sides of similarities, whilst also seeing how both the grime and hip-hop scenes seem to be uniting audiences far away from home turf.
Of her role within the documentary, Little Simz says “It’s amazing how music transcends languages, race and culture. Going to South Africa as part of Nando’s Music Exchange, exploring the streets, meeting incredible talent, and seeing first-hand how local music is looking beyond the West to create its own unique sounds and subgenres, is definitely exciting to witness.”
