British electro-house group Clean Bandit took to Radio 1’s Live Lounge earlier today, unveiling their stunning take on Lorde’s mammoth hit Royals.

The band, who are currently riding high with their Jess Glynne-featuring Rather Be, overturned Lorde’s hit, turning it from a sombre gothic down-tempo track to an upbeat club-stomper (no less opening with an instrumental take of The Snowman anthem Walking In The Air).

Annie Mac, B.Traits, Adele Roberts and more to play 12-hour show for Radio 1 ‘International Women’s Day)

0

BBC Radio 1 will be celebrating International Women’s Day with two 12-hour all-female evening line-ups.

Radio 1 will have female presenters from 7pm to 7am on Friday 7th & Saturday 8th March, including Radio 1’s first-ever female DJ and the station’s longest serving broadcaster, Annie Nightingale, alongside Annie Mac, B.Traits and Monki.

The DJs will also be picking a selection of both established and emerging female artists and producers to champion throughout their shows, and there will be a special Essential Mix from Magda, all in celebration of International Women’s Day (8 March).

Annie Nightingale, BBC Radio 1 DJ, says: “I am looking forward to celebrating the array of specialist dance DJs on Radio 1, who are female. Gender is, welcomingly, not an issue nowadays when Radio 1 appoints new DJs and it has been demonstrably supportive of women. We all desire to be judged on our abilities alone in this very competitive field and we all thrive on the respect of our peer group, and our audiences. The line-up shows our individual styles and genres from garage, house, drum n bass, r&b, hip hop, trap, grime and techno, and we shall have a lot of fun over the weekend.”

Ben Cooper, Controller of BBC Radio 1, says: “It’s fantastic that Radio 1 and 1Xtra has such a wide range of female specialist DJs. We are committed to giving opportunities to the best DJs in the world and you are going to hear something very special to celebrate International Women’s Day.”

This follows last week’s announcement that Radio 1 will have a new feel to early breakfast from March 2014 when Gemma Cairney will start in the slot that leads into Nick Grimshaw and the Breakfast team.

Gemma Cairney, who currently presents weekend breakfast on BBC Radio 1, will make her move to the daytime weekday schedule on 31 March, doing the 4am to 6.30am slot.

Gemma is part of the BBC’s Glastonbury TV coverage, won a 2013 Sony Radio Academy Gold Award for her documentary on teenage domestic violence, and began her career co-hosting with Trevor Nelson on 1Xtra. Gemma also regularly fills in for Fearne Cotton on the Radio 1 morning show, most recently over Christmas and New Year.
