Melé becomes latest artist to take on Defected’s ‘In The House’ series

Wirral-raised Melé has become the latest inductee into Defected’s coveted In The House series, delivering two new mixes under the guise of ‘Defected presents Melé In The House’.

Set to land toward the end of August, the producer describes working on the mixes as “like putting together a really hard jigsaw puzzle”, Melé’s In The House was mixed live, charting his obsession with deconstructing tracks and echoing his DJing technique using three or four decks, looping percussion and piano parts over each other for a uniquely layered effect. The mix draws on almost 25 years of house music, focussing on the Latin, tribal and percussive, along with a couple of slick curveballs. Also in the mix are three exclusive productions from Melé himself plus ‘Dancing Mist’ from Joe Corti, an up-and-comer from the UK.

Following epic rolling house moments from David Mayer ‘Movement’, Jimpster ‘Step By Step’ and the jacking wonkiness of Joeski ‘Acid Disco’ to kick things off, approaching the end of Mix 1 comes a bombshell moment in the form of The Stone Roses ‘Fools Gold’, a regular pinnacle of Melé’s explosive sets and an elevating moment within the mix. Finally for Mix 1 is a standout brand new release from Melé himself. With live percussion from drum warrior Shovell, the cover of ‘Pasilda’ pumps up the track’s unmistakeable rhythms and piano melody with an irresistibly hefty bassline and vocal loops. A long-time highlight of Melé’s sets but until now unreleased, ‘Pasilda’ is an exclusive and suitably high-octane ending to part one of the compilation.

Part two of Melé In The House kicks off with the explosive Armand Van Helden production ‘Loves Ecstasy (Peak Hour Mix)’ bringing the carnival vibes, matched with its energy by another exclusive new Melé production. The aptly named ‘Brooklyn Bounce’ is Melé’s ode to Danny Tenaglia, a key influence whose sought-after percussive spirit is apparent throughout the whole mix. A sophisticated pumping house cut with plenty of signature layered percussion, Mix 2 continues to build into the final Melé production ‘Tribal Harmonix’, the darker, more melodic and tech-inclined of the three. Primal Scream’s ‘Don’t Fight It, Feel It (Scat Mix)’ provides another curveball moment that has played a key role in Melé’s sets for a hot minute, while further highlights include Romanthony ‘Bring U Up (Jasper James Remix)’, Seven Davis Jr. ‘Friends (Eats Everything Rework)’ and Apollo 440 ‘Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Dub (Armand van Helden Snake Style Remix)’ showing Melé’s acute knack for a club-storming direction.

With his In The House contribution Melé shows his passion for dismantling seriously heavyweight house, engineering these mixes with impressive flair, taste, and plenty of percussive flavour.

Watch MØ and Diplo’s new video for ‘Sun In Our Eyes’

MØ and Diplo have shared their official video for last month’s ‘Sun In Our Eyes’.

Lifted off the Danish singer’s upcoming second studio album ‘Forever Neverland’, Mø describes the clip as taking inspiration from “Peter Pan and the lost boys — sailing instead of flying — setting out for distant shores in hopes of finding and living out their dreams. Collectively they are rejecting the harsh reality of the lives and the world they used to live in.”

“‘Sun In Our Eyes’ is a love song” MØ continues – “It circles the subject of being unwilling to accept the truth. You wanna keep riding the high even though you deep down know it might be wrong and that it’s all a self-made illusion. This theme is what the video is inspired by and it is also one of the subjects my forthcoming album Forever Neverland is dealing with.”

The 1975 to release new single next week

The 1975 have teased plans to drop another new song next week, following on from last month’s ‘Love It If We Made It‘.

According to the press release, ‘TooTime’ will land on 15th August, with the premiere provided by Radio 1’s Phil Taggart (who will sit in for Annie Mac on her 7pm show). The track will join predecessors on the band’s upcoming third studio album ‘A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships’ which is slated for a release in October. A companion album, which will fall under the group’s new ‘Music For Cars’ era will then follow in May 2019, titled ‘Notes On A Conditional Form’.

Check the teaser artwork for ‘TooTime’ below; the song will air for the first time at 19.30 (GMT) on 15th August.

SG Lewis has shared the video for his latest single ‘Better‘, his recent collaboration with rising US star Clairo.

Instantly becoming a viral hit following its premiere last month, the song’s visual further enhances the uplifting nature of the song, taking cues from classic Hype Williams-directed videos of the late-nineties with the duo seen driving around Chicago in full-length tracksuits

This year, SG Lewis began releasing music from his ambitious three-part album ‘Dusk, Dark, Dawn’. Currently in phase one – ‘Dusk’ – SG imagines the trajectory of one night out in club music and is a loving tribute to club and youth culture. Referencing a wide breadth of styles and genres, ‘Dusk’ uses disco, west coast hip-hop and 80s electro to set the scene. Soon to move into Phase 2 – ‘Dark’ – he’ll use heavier styles like techno and rap to move the crowd into the night before heading off on a major US tour.

Watch Jack Grace’s silky new video for ‘If I Tremble’

Sydney-born, Paris-based songwriter Jack Grace has shared the video for his gorgeous ‘If I Tremble’, the title-track to his recently-released new EP.

Originally unveiled in its audio form back in April, the track now sees a visual interpretation, directed by Kaius Potter with creative direction from Lauren Faye of London’s esteemed Clo Studio.

The clip comes after a solid 6 months for Grace, having already been heralded by the likes of Beats 1’s Zane Lowe, alongside Zan Rowe from Sydney’s Triple J. With a US tour happening in September, Jack shows no signs of slowing, with more new music promised on the horizon.

Tipped as a Sound of 2018 by BBC Introducing Essex and nominated as Best Electronic Act 2018 at the Unsigned Music Awards, Southend four-piece Southchurch have shared their latest single, teaming up with UKG legend Wookie for the sun-laced ‘One Life’.

“It was a great moment for us to work with someone that’s had such a big influence on the music we’re into” said the band of their new collaboration – “All artists have different formulas, we all approach projects differently. So being able to watch Wookie do his thing was a treat. Sometimes you have sessions and it’s very forced and hard to mix with other artists or producers creatively. However within the first 90 seconds we knew we were going to create a smash”.

Aphex Twin announces ‘Collapse’ EP; stream new song ‘T69 Collapse’

After sharing mysterious teasers across major cities over the past few weeks, Aphex Twin has finally announced his return to the scene with his all-new ‘Collapse’ EP.

Confirmed as the producer’s first studio work since 2016’s ‘Cheetah’, ‘Collapse’ will arrive on 14th September across a multitude of formats – CD, cassette, vinyl and of course streaming.

Alongside revealing the new project, Aphex has also shared the first visuals for the EP’s lead cut, ‘T69 Collapse’. Catch it below, though be warned, there’s heavy strobing and flickering in the video so we’ve placed the Spotify audio underneath too.

Hear Mura Masa and NAO reconnect for the wavy ‘Complicated’

Mura Masa has shared his new single ‘Complicated’.

Teaming up once again with long-term collaborator NAO, the song is the next piece of the puzzle for the producer’s forthcoming second studio album, the follow-up to last year’s self-titled debut. Back in May, the young musician, real name Alex Crossan, released ‘Move Me‘, a collaboration with London-based MC Octavian; the past few months has also seen Crossan hard at work with Nile Rodgers where he has contributed a handful of songs for the upcoming Chic album ‘It’s About Time’.

Review: London Grammar at Bestival 2018

It’s safe to say eyebrows were raised when, earlier this year, Bestival organisers announced London Grammar as their 2018 Saturday night headliners.

Sure the trio really can do no wrong – with two albums under their belt, both of which have become spectacular works of art in their own right, plus earning a credibility most could only dream of, their place at the top of the Bestival line-up was duly-deserved. However, historically, regardless of festival, headliners are assumed to be bold, brash, big and loud… four elements that are potentially at polar opposites of what make London Grammar, so, well, great.

However all fears were put to bed the minute lead-vocalist Hannah Reid sung her first note. Of sorts, Bestival was a homecoming show for the group, having been on the road pretty much since second album ‘Truth Is A Beautiful Thing’ landed last year. Their other major UK festival soiree was over twelve months back when they returned to Glastonbury, though being the penultimate act on the John Peel Stage put them right at odds clashing with Ed Sheeran on the final night. This evening though, it was firmly a London Grammar moment – a headline performance of The xx-proportions.

Filled with some of the most stunning atmospherics, the trio’s show offered all the ethereality that festival-goers require, and all without the fuss too. People were less jumping up and down, instead mesmerised by the three open souls on the Castle Stage. From first album-classics ‘Hey Now’, ‘Strong’ and ‘Nightcall’, all the way to their latest material, there never felt a moment of anyone excusing themselves to pop to the bar for a cheeky pint. Tonight was a moment of epic proportions surrounded by a sense of sheer opulence.

Just like the question marks raised when Adele was appointed Glastonbury headliner back in 2016 (and subsequently proved everyone wrong), tonight showed that London Grammar have earned their right to headline, whichever festival it may be. And just like many headline artists throughout past years, it’s thanks to Bestival for once again realising their potential and putting them on that giant pedestal.

An evening few will ever forget.
