New theatre production to open based on London riots

0

Though this is a blog primarily around new music, I’ve just stumbled upon something that may be of interest to some of our readers (it is to me at least!)

A new musical, entitled ‘Streets Project’ (and based on 2011’s infamous, and unfortunate, London riots) is currently in production. In essence, think Kidulthood with a soundtrack and dance.
What promises to be not only an exciting and fresh take on modern theatre, ‘Streets Project’ has strong backing by some leading names. Produced by director Adam Boland, the project (which will have its residency at the Cockpit Theatre in Marylebone) is accompanied by an original score (by Finn Anderson) and tells the tale of a group of friends around the time of the devastating riots.
Teasing the plotline, co-writer of the Streets Project book, Tori Allen-Martin, says:
‘We are products of our environment, and there are reasons we make the choices we do. We are all so quick to judge each others actions, but what if you were faced with something unimaginable. Behind every closed door there is a story, we wanted to delve into that, look at an end result and work backwards, what factors caused it, what was inevitable, what could have been different, when did the beginning become the end?’
With the choreography (led by Kamilah Beckles and Ryan-Lee Seager) expected to be a fusion of hip-hop and contemporary, this could actually turn out to be one of the very few ‘cool’ musicals out there.
We’re hoping to get hold of the official video in a couple of days, however in the interim, check out the project’s official website here. Tickets are available now, with the show opening 4th April.

[NEW MUSIC] AlunaGeorge announce new single and album release date

0

Every time a new AlunaGeorge track either leaks or is officially announced, fans get more and more excited. It’s obvious as to why – their sound is so pristine, whilst each release sounds better and better than their previous stormer.

This theme continues in new track ‘Attracting Flies’, shared today by the band’s official Soundcloud. Singer Aluna Francis’ vocals are a combination of piercing, sweet and soulful, whilst producer George Reid’s sound is nothing short of sophisticated. Another triumph, though hardly unexpected either.

The song is taken from their debut album, now with an official title and official release date. ‘Body Music’ will be released on 1st July, just in time for festival season (and just after their key Glastonbury headline).

I can’t wait – this track’s a stormer so check out below:

[VIDEO] David Bowie releases impressive video for ‘The Stars (Are Out Tonight)’

0

David Bowie has released the accompanying video to new single ‘The Stars (Are Out Tonight)’.

The single is the second new release off Bowie’s forthcoming album ‘The Next Day’, due for a UK release on March 11th.

Though I’ve never been the biggest of Bowie fans, both the song and video are fantastic. The creative efforts that have gone into the video’s production to exemplify 21st century celebrity divide should be applauded.

Brooklyn duo Tanya Morgan have released the first cut off their new LP Rubber Souls onto the interwebs. ‘For Real’ is produced by 6th Sense and comes with a summery jazzy groove over a smooth hip-hop beat.

Whilst the beat takes centre stage, it’s the gents’ lyrics that really cut it. It’s all superb really.

Rubber Souls drops this summer, however ‘For Real’ is available to download now for free below.

[NEWS] Brian Eno and RZA confirmed on new James Blake album

Blake’s unique blend of post-modern dubstep, fused with harmonious electro beats has earned him many respectable nominations, including both Ivor Novello and Mercury Music.

[NEW MUSIC] Yeah Yeah Yeahs unveil fantastic new single ‘Sacrilege’

0

American indie band Yeah Yeah Yeahs have just unveiled their brilliant new single ‘Sacrilege’. The track is taken from new album ‘Mosquito’, due out this year.

Other tracks to appear on the album have been confirmed as ‘Mosquito’, ‘Despair’, ‘Always’ and ‘Earth’.

For Sacrilege, the band have gone down the unusual route of adding in a gospel choir toward the end, incredibly effective. The track’s up-tempo, great beat, sublime vocals…. I’m buying!

I’ve never been a fan of the band in fairness, however with music like this, I may have been turned.

[NEW MUSIC] Wyclef Jean unveils new single ‘Midlife Crisis’

0

Ex-Fugees frontman Wyclef Jean has unveiled his new single ‘Midlife Crisis’. Taken from forthcoming mixtape ‘April Showers’, this is Jean’s first major release since 2009’s ‘From the Hut, To the Projects, To the Mansion’.

His previous single ‘Hip Hop’, also taken from ‘April Showers’, was a down-tempo effort, whilst ‘Midlife Crisis’ goes 180 to provide a high-energy feel with double-time drums and repeating synths. It’s great and a positive example of the direction Mr Fu-Gee-La is going with his latest music.
