Skepta’s Konnichiwa reigned supreme at the 2016 Mercury Music Prize last night, beating the likes of Laura Mvula, Kano and The 1975 to deliver the first gong of its kind to a grime act since Dizzee Rascal’s Boy In Da Corner back in 2003.
Skepta narrowly pipped bookie’s favourite Blackstar by David Bowie to win not just the award but also a cheque for £40,000 too. After becoming the latest recipient, the North London MC said “For everyone who knows what it takes to put an album together it’s so much more than making the music, everyone who was there for me when I was going through depressed times….We just did this for us, but the love is very appreciated.”
