’16 for 2016: Ones To Watch’ – Mabel

Most offspring of powerhouse music supremos usually have it made when they want to venture off on their own course within the industry – modern culture tells us that you don’t need talent in order to gain a social media following by the millions; purely you just need to have at least one famous parent or sibling. In that respect, you could potentially forgive Mabel for wanting to launch her own career, and she’s dead-set on doing things by her own rule-book.

First thing’s first, mind… this girl has talent that could go head-to-head with many of her established contemporaries.

Parented by Neneh Cherry and Cameron McVey, you’d expect Mabel to have a long list of suiters she could work with; undoubtedly she probably does, however she seems far more comfortable working within her own choice of collaborators versus tapping up either of her parents’ phonebooks. The 19 year-old’s debut Know Me Better proves that point entirely; leading by her own course and destine, Mabel’s strive for quality over anything else has instantly led to her being a shining example from the new-breed of young credible artists (with the song’s sfsfs follow-up equally as charming).

Her gorgeous, soulful, and tender way of story-telling has also led Mabel to achieve nods from the likes of Annie Mac, Zane Lowe, Julie Adenuga, Huw Stephens and Phil Taggart (amongst others) – no easy feat when the aforementioned genuinely push interesting music over a follower-count.

Mabel’s definitely an intriguing catch, made even more captivating with her focus on not living under her parental limelight. With that, plus her hugely-compelling originality, we’re excited to hear what 2016 brings for her.
