Music snobbery is a funny old game, isn’t it? Apparently, if you like one genre, you can’t like songs from any other (or so your ‘specialist-loving’ friend may tell you).
A year ago, it may have been unthinkable to agree that pop was great…. “Bieber’s now cool”; “That new 1D song is brilliant” etc etc are just some of the phrases that now exist, and why the fuck not? Vanessa White is one prime example – we’ve literally been hooked since she dropped her delicious Don’t Wanna Be Your Lover a couple of weeks back, and this is from a portal that also divvies up grime, bass and house as fortès.
White may have won hordes of fans with The Saturdays, but Don’t Wanna Be Your Lover is massively-mature, and clearly shows that she’s feeling a genre which has been thrown all around the houses over the past decade. Slinking things back to 90s R&B territory is a winner if executed correctly, and Vanessa has done a fine job.
Today, she also shares a new edit of the track, with Nick Brewer also jumping on for a guest verse – a strong song has just become stronger.
