Exclusive Mix: Riddim Commission

Over the past decade, we’ve seen music fusing across the board, primarily in a bid for those under-developed genres to capitalise on successful entities. This has never been more prevalent than within grime (remember when Wiley decided to go all ‘house’ and throw his bars over the likes of Wearing My Roles, or Dizzee’s clusterfuck when his Holiday collab with Calvin Harris became a pretty-much shitshow?) – granted these were commercial successes, but in fairness, they did kind of sway the credibility of the aforementioned within their hardcore fanbase (fortunately both artists seem to be back on their game now, not only doing what their fans love, but ultimately what they love too).

Anyway, we digress. What we’re saying is that the emersion of cross-genres may have started out being pretty piss-poor attempts, however now we’re finally getting somewhere, and not only are artists embracing, but also both hardcore and commercial fans too. Therefore, we suppose we’d be dead-set on replacing ‘genre fusion’ with ‘genre bridge-building’ (maybe, let’s call that a work-in-progress, shall we?).

Two of the best that seem to ‘build bridges’ fortunately come under one name – Riddim Commission. A collaborative effort between DJ Swerve and Marco Del Horno, the duo seem to know the difference between ‘great’ and ‘shit’ – fortunately, we’ve never heard anything from the twosome fall into that latter camp.

Essentially, Riddim Commission have found a way of bringing together elements of grime, bass and house to formulate some pretty out-there pieces of art (you only need to look at their recent Full Metal Jacker EP to find a collection that’s so on-point that you wonder why the fuck they’re not ruling the world). Selfishly-speaking though, we’re pretty happy they’re not ruling the waves yet, as otherwise their exclusive mix they provided probably wouldn’t have happened.

Today, Riddim Commission kindly provided us the aforementioned mix, a one-hour collection of some dirty, grimey house music, that’s as darkened as one would hope from both genres, yet also spirited and enjoyable as the best in those areas can be.
