D’Angelo made his Saturday Night Live debut last night, bringing along new cuts Really Love and The Charade, both lifted from his surprise third studio album, Black Messiah.
Accompanied by The Vanguard (alongside The Original 7ven/The Time guitarist Jesse Johnson), the R&B star brought the house down, and further whetted appetites for his upcoming tour (which sees D’Angelo hit four UK dates later this month).
The timing of the star’s appearance was also incredibly-apt, coinciding with the eve of the first day of America’s ‘Black History Month’; as such, The Charade‘s performance saw D’Angelo in a hoodie, paying reference to the recent killings of Eric Garner and Michael Brown, whilst also assisted by members of The Vanguard sporting “I can’t breathe” t-shirts. Powerful stuff!
