Young Fathers win Mercury Music Prize 2014

One year on from James Blake taking home the coveted accolade, Young Fathers have become the 2014 recipient of the coveted Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize for their latest album Dead.

The record, released earlier this year, saw Young Fathers beat off stiff competition from the likes of Kate Tempest (Everybody Down), Anna Calvi (One Breath), Jungle (Jungle), Damon Albarn (Everyday Robots), FKA Twigs (LP1) and more to collect the award, which also sees them take home a £20,000 prize fund for future projects.

Young Fathers accepted the award from show-host Nick Grimshaw, with Alloysious Massaquoi being the only member of the trio to speak, saying “thank you, thank you…. we love you, thank you”.

Upon its release, Dead won favourable reviews from critics across the sphere, with The Guardian’s Alexis Petridis citing that the record “recalls the pioneering spirit of Massive Attack”.
