A musical based on iconic movie trilogy Back To The Future, has been announced, with its stage debut in London’s West End expected for next year.
The theatre version will see the original movie’s co-writers Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale reunite to script the new adaptation, which Gale promise will be “true to the spirit of the film without being a slavish remake”.
A brand new score will be written for the stage musical, however some iconic tracks will remain, (Huey Lewis & The News’ The Power Of Love and Chuck Berry’s Johnny B. Goode to name but two), to ensure the stage version is “fresh, entertaining and takes advantage of all the amazing things that can now be done on stage”.
The announcement comes as the series celebrates its 30th anniversary of the original, of which the stage adaptation will retain most of the focus (whilst the sequel was warmly received, it was the third movie in the trilogy that was heavily panned by fans and critics alike).
The show’s producer Jamie Lloyd has said the stage version would “include illusions, skateboarding and many other surprises that will capture the spirit of the film but freshly interpret it for a new audience”.
