BBC Radio 1 have announced that their annual ‘Radio 1’s Big Weekend’ event will take place in Glasgow this year, following Derry and London over the previous two years.

The Glasgow Green event, which takes place on the 24/25th May weekend, will see 50,000 lucky music fans enjoy performances by some of the country’s biggest artists, in what’s dubbed as the ‘UK’s biggest free ticketed event’.

In addition to the Big Weekend, Radio 1 also announced a night dedicated to dance music on Friday 23 May.

The news was announced by Nick Grimshaw this morning as he broadcast his Radio 1 Breakfast Show live from BBC Scotland, at Pacific Quay in Glasgow. He was joined by Rita Ora, as well as Scottish singer Paolo Nutini who performed in front of an invited audience of local school children, and are the first acts to be confirmed so far for the event, with more to be announced over the coming months.

Further details around ticketing will be announced in March, listeners will need to stay tuned to Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra for details.
