From Musicweek.com (link)

Streaming service Spotify has signed up as the headline sponsor for the Music Week Awards 2013.

Taking place on Thursday, April 11 at The Brewery venue in Central London, the ceremony will reward the brightest and best from the UK music industry over the past year.

There are 23 categories in all, including A&R, Manager, Live Promoter, Live Music Venue, Publisher, Distribution Team, Sales Team, Catalogue Marketing Campaign and Artist Marketing Campaign.

As ever, the prestigious Music Week Strat award will celebrate the multiple industry achievements of an industry ‘legend’ over the decades.

Lobbying for the Music Week Awards 2013 has now closed. The judges are whittling down each category’s shortlists, which will be announced later this month. An cross-industry panel will then vote for the winners.

Will Hope, director of label relations at Spotify said: “We’re excited to be sponsoring this year’s Music Week Awards.

Celebrating the best of the best of the industry, the MWAs is always an important fixture on the calendar.

“2013 is lining up to be a defining year for the future of music, so this year’s awards should be an evening to remember.”

[NEW MUSIC] 50 Cent releases video & new track Financial Freedom

0

Here we go folks, breaking new music for you from 50 Cent.

To mark the 10 year anniversary (yes, it’s been that long), of debut album ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin’, Mr Cent has just uploaded a brand new single ‘Financial Freedom’.

Since ‘Get Rich’s’ release, 50 has become a powerhouse in the hip-hop industry, and one of the wealthiest music stars out there.

Personally, over the years, I felt 50 Cent had lost his edge, but this is brilliant and back to his best. It marks similar territory to The Game’s ‘The Documentary’, which I know is controversial seeing as there’s still rivalry between the two, but this track is fantastic.

[LIVE] AlunaGeorge perform with a live band on The Culture Show

I love this. Absolutely superb! I’ve been singing AlunaGeorge’s praising for the past 18 months or so, and I’m ridiculously excited at the amount of positive press they’re getting of late.

Yesterday, the UK duo performed with a full live band on BBC2’s ‘The Culture Show’ to promote their 2011 single ‘You Know You Like It’. The performance of the track, off debut LP ‘Body Music’, was recorded in London’s Hayward Gallery ahead of the new ‘Light Show’ exhibit.

[NEWS] HMV closes 66 stores; 930 job losses

0

Bankrupt entertainment retailer HMV are to close 66 stores, making 930 employees redundant, administrators have announced.

Administrators for the beleaguered chain have said:

“As part of our ongoing review of HMV’s financial position, we have now completed a review of the store portfolio and have identified 66 loss making stores for closure. This step has been taken in order to enhance the prospects of securing the business’ future as a going concern.

We continue to receive strong support from staff and are extremely grateful to them for their commitment during an understandably difficult period. All other key stakeholders remain very supportive and I continue to be hopeful of securing a future for the restructured business.

No fixed date is set for the closure of these stores which will continue to trade in the meantime. However, it is expected that closures will take place over the next one to two months.”

The closures mark just under 1/3 of the 220 HMV stores throughout the UK, however a multitude of national corporations have been looking at possibilities of buying up branches.

Have Spotify users unwittingly predicted the Grammy winners?

0

Spotify, the commercial music streaming application that launched just over 3 years ago, has more data on you than you probably realise. However, unlike the Facebooks and Googles of this world, it’s not wholly personal data that they’re using. Nosiree, it’s actually data based on your listening habits, and it’s one of the many ways in which its algorithm is used to show you what new music you may like to listen to. And that’s no bad thing….

In a way to trial how effective their data is, Spotify have set about trying to guess the outcome of this weekend’s Grammy Awards.

Their predictions have been based on how often specific songs, albums and artists are listened to; in what quantity and in what timeframe. They’ve then overlayed this data [sorry if I’m getting too technical here] with user information based on age (aka, the overall buying and voting demographic). Remember, they have millions of users globally, so the amount of data they have could actually end up giving quite a strong ‘real-life’ representation.

Spotify has said that this ‘game’ of using data was “to predict which nominees would walk away with the coveted gilded gramophones if it were up to Spotify users”.

Here are some of their predictions, again based on listenership. What are your thoughts? Do you think Carly Rae Jepson should win over Adele?

[NEW MUSIC] DJ Luck & MC Neat return with ‘Lighting Fires’

0

UK Garage heads rejoice. Afraid of missing out on the #YearOfTheComeback moniker that’s been rejoicing music fans so far this year, British garage duo DJ Luck & MC Neat have revealed their new track ‘Lighting Fires’.

The duo are well known for making the garage genre turn mainstream with oustanding tracks at the turn of the century, releasing debut ‘A Little Bit of Luck’ in 1999.

Their sample of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Masterblaster (Jammin) on ‘Masterblaster 2000’ showed that there could be a positive fusion of underground music with soulful vocals and led the way to groups such as Mis-teeq to become more prominent in the charts.

I have to say, I was at first sceptical when I heard about a new track, but this is superb. With a 2-step beat akin to the garage-days of old, I’m really hoping that this succeeds in relaunching UKG back into the hearts and minds of the [now] 30-something garage-heads.

Confirmed by a tweet (above) and on the US rapper’s ‘Life & Times’ blog, Minogue is the second major after Timbaland’s announcement on 30th January.

Last year, Kylie infamously celebrated her 25th year within the music industry with an intimate UK/Australia tour as well as an album of her own discography recorded at Abbey Road studios.

What do you think of this signing? Could we be seeing an edgier Kylie and a possible shift away from the pop charts?

Watch Kylie’s hit ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ below; a track NME called the ‘4th Greatest Pop Song in History’ in a 2012 poll.

[NEWS] Emeli Sande’s stunning performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live

0

British soul/RnB singer Emeli Sande wowed audiences last night during her performance on US-TV’s Jimmy Kimmel Live.

The Scottish singer, who performed her Top-5 hit ‘Next To Me’, has been using her time in the States to crack the coveted US market with her debut album ‘Our Version of Events’.

Sande was probably the most coveted artist of 2012, having ‘starring’ roles in the London 2012 Olympic Games (both Opening & Closing Ceremonies) as well as the recent BBC Sports Personality Of The Year. She’s also been in the studio over the past 12 months writing for other artists, notably preparing material for the comeback album of our very own ex-Sugababes Mutya Keisha Siobhan.
