[NEW MUSIC] Leddra Chapman releases new EP ‘The Crowds and Cocktails’

0

If you’ve been a fan of finding new online talent for a few years now, the name Leddra Chapman should not be a surprise to you. The Essex-born singer shot to internet fame (thanks to SBTV) a few years back with her harmonic take on Jamie T’s ‘Sheila’, whilst her debut album, 2009’s ‘Telling Tales’ was praised by critics [and fans] alike.

Today, Leddra released her new EP ‘The Crowds and Cocktails’ via iTunes. It’s beautiful. Harking back to the styles of ‘Telling Tales’, the 4 track (plus 1 live performance) is a fantastic fusion of acoustic and pop.

‘The Crowds and Cocktails’ is available to purchase now here from iTunes. Check out her homage to Jamie T’s ‘Sheila’ below. If you ever get the opportunity to see Leddra live, I sincerely suggest you go!

Enjoy

[NEW MUSIC] Bonobo returns with Erykah Badu in tow

British producer Bonobo has just announced the second single off his anticipated upcoming album ‘The North Borders’. ‘Heaven For A Sinner’ features soul goddess Erykah Badu and will be available for release on 1st April. The laid-back soulful ‘groove’ is stunning… akin to the Bank’s fabulous remix of Bonobo’s ‘The Keeper’ off the ‘Black Sands: Remixed’ album.

Check it out for yourselves below as well as the above remix of The Keeper:

[NEW MUSIC] JME – If You Don’t Know

0

Grime artist JME’s absence with continuous new material has been far too long in my opinion, however here he is, back again with new track ‘If You Don’t Know’.

The East-London rapper follows up his hit ‘Banger’ (featuring Wiley) with another anthem, and I’m pleased to say it’s a good-un. To me, this harks back to the early days of the London grime scene in the early/mid-2000’s (along the lines of WD25, Bare-Faced What etc) – very very very appealing…

The video’s below for your audio and visual pleasure, whilst the track (which will be released on JME’s own label ‘Boy Better Know’) can be pre-ordered from iTunes here.

[WATCH] Beyonce tells all on ‘Oprah’s Next Chapter’

One hour before HBO broadcast Beyonce’s no-holds-barred documentary ‘Life Is But A Dream’ (available to watch here), Oprah Winfrey debuted a special episode of her ‘Next Chapter’ series featuring the RnB megastar.

Even if you’re not a fan of Mrs Carter-Knowles, you NEED to see this! In the interview, B opens up about her turbulent relationship with her father Matthew Knowles (and why she fired him as manager) as well as some great times with Jay-Z and daughter Blue Ivy. She also mentions how post her next tour will be the ideal time for her to try for kid number two.

When mentioning her father, Beyonce says:

“It took a while for me and my dad to have an understanding. When I turned 18 and started handling my business more, he went into shock. And we had our issues. I’d say ‘No’ to something, and he’d book it anyway. Then I’d have to do it because I’d look bad [if I didn’t]. We would fight sometimes, and it took about two years, to when I was 20, for him to realize, ‘Oh, she is an adult now, and if she doesn’t wanna do something, I can’t make her do it.”

[WATCH] Beyonce opens up in documentary ‘Life Is But A Dream’

Premiering on US channel HBO last night, Beyonce opened up in her hotly anticipated documentary ‘Life Is But A Dream’.

Both fans and critics alike awarded the documentary (which covered everything from Blue Ivy to miscarriage) rave reviews.

Beyonce’s role was not solely aligned to just the front of the camera – Mrs Carter also directed and executive produced the full film which gives us a huge glimpse into her personal life.

On why she chose to premiere it on HBO, Beyonce said:

HBO has a history of pushing every boundary with class and authenticity. Some of my favorite shows are on HBO, so I am excited that my film will be part of its bold programming. This film was so personal to me, it had to have the right home.

[NEW MUSIC] Hudson Mohawke remixes Disclosure/AlunaGeorge ‘White Noise’

0

Scottish EDM producer Hudson Mohawke has remixed the current UK smash ‘White Noise’. The track by Disclosure and featuring amazing newcomers AluneGeorge, has captivated the UK charts and is a firm favourite here at Stagedoor towers.

Mohawke takes the track to stratospheric levels here; manipulating parts of the tracks akin to a modern-day Todd Edwards, whilst maintaining the quality and integrity of the original track. Fantastic.

Simply put, this could go down as one of my favourite remixes in years….of anything….ever….

Universal Music to start receiving royalties from YouTube covers

0

Remember a few years ago when record labels tried to shut down every music video they could on YouTube? There was of course obvious sense in that (from their POV), however the consumer persisted and eventually labels realised the might of the visual web to appeal to a new untapped fanbase.

Move forward to 2013 and Universal Music seems to be the first major label out there to start embracing the ‘next wave’ of YouTube music. According to the Wall Street Journal:

Universal Music Publishing Group has struck deals with Maker Studios Inc. and Fullscreen Inc., two of the biggest “multichannel networks”—a new breed of digital entertainment companies that distribute, promote and sometimes produce videos specifically made for Google Inc.’s YouTube. Under terms of the deals, Universal will get an undisclosed percentage of revenue from ads that run alongside cover videos of the publisher’s songs on YouTube.

This is a smart move in my eyes:
1) Everyone loves a good cover video. The best cover videos are often virally/socially shared to millions with zero media costs behind it.
2) Cover videos probably sit there within the Top 5 ‘categories’ in YouTube (my opinion only) in terms of scale.
3) The internet is massive…. and trackable.

Confused about that last point? Well, no doubt part of Universal’s deal would mean they would have access to reports on the most popular videos the revenue-shared ads have appeared by. If they haven’t agreed this already, then they should! With this data, which is effectively ‘real-time’, their A&R teams could pounce on the most engaging artists out there and quickly snap them up before other labels get a chance. You may not be fans of Justin Bieber, but thanks to a quick-thinking marketing chap who spotted his videos on YouTube, it wasn’t long before he was signed to Island – no-one needs to tell you the rest.

Think about it; remember that high-school kid Greyson Chance whose cover of Lady Gaga’s ‘Paparazzi’ went global in days? (video below)

Within 5 weeks of this going viral, Chance was announced as the first signing for Ellen Degeneres’ own label.

There’s millions of covers out there. This is a smart move by Universal and I’ll be surprised if other labels don’t [quickly] follow suit.

Jamie Cullum goes soulfully hip-hop with Roots Manuva on new single ‘Love for $ale’

0

Pint-sized jazz pianist Jamie Cullum has joined forces with London-based rapper Roots Manuva on new track ‘Love for $ale’.

Cullum has always been known for trialing new genres with his soulful tones; remember his cover of Rihanna’s ‘Please Don’t Stop The Music’?

This time he’s linked up for a drum-heavy-yet-still-smooth duet with Roots Manuva. Having been a big fan of both for a while now, it’s great to hear these two collaborate. It’s unusual but completely on-point, with both artists taking the opportunity to outshine each-other in the talent-stakes.

The video (below) is a fantastic narrative that really should be watched without distraction, telling a strong story in the process.

Cullum and Manuva have also released the track as a free download; available here.
