Sam Smith has spoken candidly regarding Scars, a heartfelt track that’s set to appear on his forthcoming second album.

Whilst the release date for the new material has yet to be confirmed (don’t expect the second album to land anytime soon, “there is no schedule” says Smith in a recent interview, nor is there any pressure for it to be released just yet following the storming success of his In The Lonely Hour debut), the young British singer has still teased one of the new record’s inclusions, the aforementioned Scars.

Speaking to The Guardian, Smith details the creation of the song as a means of “resolve the subject [of his parents’ split] in his head”. “I flicked into big-brother mode” he says, continuing that he “refused to let something like that break us apart. [I] just made sure that if we were feeling something we said it.”

Whilst it’s unlikely we’ll hear any of the new project’s material imminently – Smith is still continuing promotion of In The Lonely Hour, particularly with the rerelease of Lay Me Down – it’s encouraging to know that the singer realises that his fanbase are activity excited for a follow-up.

Indeed, the past 18-months has been a whirlwind for the Londoner, and whilst many may like to thank the likes of Disclosure for giving him that step into the limelight, In The Lonely Hour‘s success undoubtedly has been down to an artist creating a project so raw, so meaningful, and yet so current, that his spiral into the stratosphere has been massively deserved – we’re still quietly smug that we touted Smith to great things two years ago when we first premiered Lay Me Down (you can read that post here).

Sam Smith plays at the BRIT Awards later this week; meanwhile Lay Me Down received its official release today (22nd February) – hit the iTunes link to download and watch the powerful, and heartfelt video, below:
