Black Butter Records, one of our favourite indie labels to emerge over the past few years, has formulated a new deal with Sony Music UK.

According to CMU, the label, who houses such artists as Wayward, Rudimental, Gorgon City and more, have signed with the major to become a standalone imprint.

Sony CEO Jason Iley said of the new deal, ““Black Butter is the most exciting label to have emerged in the last five years, so this is a real coup for us. Henry and Joe bring with them a rare talent for spotting exceptional acts. The deal is a significant benchmark in Sony Music UK’s growth plan for the future. Henry and Joe’s vision and enthusiasm is incredible and they’re the perfect fit for the new look Sony Music”.

This is an exciting time for both majors and indies in our opinion, showing that the bigger labels out there understand the importance of what’s currently happening in the UK marketplace, and how consumers are directing the success of artists via social media versus purely traditional sales.

Props to Black Butter on this! Head over to CMU for the full story.
